THE ADVENTURES WE FOUND THERE

Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, Saint Mark's Basilica, Rialto Bridge

Sights & Tastes of Venice

What We Saw

Spectacular things around every corner.  Churches, canals, art, old buildings and a lot of people touring the island

What We Did

Walked, a lot.  We walked 12 miles a day for 2 days straight.  This is equivalent to a marathon.  Read more about our adventures on our Venice blog post

Where We Ate:
Ristorante ai Barbacani   Tucked away in the medieval heart of Venice, still very close to San Marco, Ristorante Ai Barbacani is situated off a quiet alleyway in a breathtaking 700 year old building. It's been a vibrant boutique eatery for more than 60 years, serving traditional venetian dishes in an atmospheric setting.  This came highly recommended by our friends Al & Katie.   The cuisine is traditional Veneto style and mostly fish-based but there are a number of other choices for non-fish eaters and vegetarians.

Trovatore (3 minutes from St Marks Square) Seafood, Pizza, Pasta

Trattoria al Gazzettino   Outside the "classic" tourist destinations, however strategically it located a few steps from the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco serving meat, seafood & risotto.

Where We Stayed :  "Castello District" of Venice

Impossibly picturesque, the canals of Castello include lush park spaces and churches dating back to the 1200s. Locals’ laundry drapes over the clotheslines that crisscross this central neighborhood’s floating roads, and the sight of undershirts baking in the sun only adds to its enchantment. Despite the crowds of St. Mark’s Square being minutes away, a general calm fills the air among Castello’s boat ramps, naval bastions, and tiny bookshops.

We found a quaint apartment on AirBnb, hosted by the owner "Patrizia" who was nothing but responsive to our questions and provided the best hand drawn maps any guest could ever want.
