Florence
Art, more walking and a visit to David
Renaissance art and a visit to David
Florence is a big city with rich history and incredible art. DaVinci's David is here and we're excited to meet him. We arrive to our apartment and are greeted by our host "Marco". We get checked in and then take a couple of hours to relax and take a nap. I think the riding, hiking and drinking is beginning to catch up. We needed a re-boot.
Day 1: We spent the first day just cruising around the area so that we could get a lay of the land. We considered renting bikes but the car, scooter and pedestrain traffic was so busy that we had to be careful simply crossing the street on foot. I wasn't so sure about navigating this city on a bike. We decided to stay on foot and get a lay of the land that way. It was the right choice. We got our bearings and are ready to
Day 2: There was so much to see here, it was a little overwhelming and the lines were long. As we made our way through the streets we were approached by a tour company and quickly decided to pay for the 5 hour group tour. It was a good choice. The Uffizi Galary alone could take 2 days to get through. It was huge and full of Renaissance art. Our tour guide showed our small group the most important and well know pieces along with a lesson about each one. We took a lunch break and then re-joined our group to explore the Duomo cathedral, a walking tour through the streets and finally at the end of the day we went to the Academia to visit DaVinci's "David". David was beyond impressive. A once in a lifetime opportunity. We were so pleased with our decision to pay a little extra for the guided tour. We didn't have to figure anything out on our own, skipped the lines and learned 100x more than we would've had we toured the museums on our own.
Florence is a cool place to visit but with so many things to see and so much history, spend a little more and do a guided tour if you come for a visit. We wouldn't do it any other way.
Good bye Florence, we're off to our final destination of the trip: Rome
